Sarah and Edmund’s incredible walking challenge
Friday 7th January 2022
If you are looking for motivation as you start the new year look no further than Sarah and Edmund. At the start of lockdown they set themselves a fundraising walking challenge which they kept going every day from 23rd March 2020 to 19th July 2021 clocking up 2009 miles. This works out at just over 4,1 miles per day, an achievement which would challenge many a young athlete but Sarah is 78 and Edmund 80. They were not deterred by hail, gale, back/hip problems but kept going to raise funds to support Queen Victoria Hospital. They have been long standing supporters of the hospital after Edmund’s younger brother was treated there for severe burns at the age of 4 early in 1950. Their grit and determination has inspired many and, having set up an initial target of £500, they ended up raising just over £2000 to support our hospital charity.
Camilla Slattery, head of fundraising said ‘We are so impressed by their unwavering commitment to support patients and staff at our hospital. It is just incredible. It is such an inspiration to us all and especially at this time of year when many of us are thinking of ways to get a bit fitter this is a great way to do it whilst raising money for charity at the same time. A huge thanks to Edmund and Sarah for all of their time, hard word and the wonderful amount they have raised that will go on to help so many. We are beyond grateful for their support.’
