Local boy Henry aged 9 is ‘star baker’ for Queen Victoria Hospital

Whilst many of us are inspired weekly by the baking delights created on the ‘Great British Bake off’ local East Grinstead boy Henry, aged 9, set out to do more than watch. In order to achieve his silver award at Cubs, he was set the task to raise money for a chosen charity. Without hesitation he chose to support his local NHS charity. He was an avid clapper on a Thursday evening throughout lockdown and due to Covid19, the NHS was at the front of his mind.

The cakes he decided to sell were cupcakes; chocolate & vanilla, chocolate rice crispy cakes, chocolate chip cookies, blueberry muffins (his favourite) and then Mum baked a fruit cake to add to the mix.

Henry enjoys baking with his mum, especially cracking the eggs & taste testing. He is less keen on the clearing up.

After leafleting the local neighbours, and telling friends, he set up his stall outside his house to sell. He had a roaring trade and everyone was very generous with their donations.

Henry’s parents said “We are very proud of what Henry achieved.  As a local family, we have all benefited from having the Queen Victoria hospital so close. We are happy that the money that Henry raised can go to such a worthy cause.”

Camilla Slattery, head of fundraising for QVH Charity said: “Henry is definitely our very own ‘star baker’. What a fantastic initiative! We would love to encourage other children and families in our community to come together and do the same. Our hospital charity provides vital support to the hospital and your donations help us make such a difference both to staff and patients. This is a great way to support your local hospital. Please contact me on camilla.slattery@nhs.net if you have any questions about how to get started.”

The health and the safety of our QVH Charity supporters is really important to us. Please keep safe and follow the Government Guidelines including any local lockdown requirements when doing any fundraising on behalf QVH Charity.
